The Oakland Ballet School offers adult classes for those interested in trying ballet for the very first time to the advanced dancer looking to continue their study and enjoyment of dance. Drop-in classes allow for flexibility in ones schedule while our adult sessions progress technique, vocabulary, and movement through 6-week courses.

 

Introduction to Ballet

Our Introduction to Ballet I course is perfect for the absolute beginner or for the dancer who is perhaps returning to ballet for the first time since their youth. The class moves at a more slow and methodical pace, focusing on proper alignment, muscle engagement, and coordination, while learning the basic positions of the legs and arms and foundational movements such as plié, battement tendu, relevé, and souté.

The Introduction to Ballet II course a follow-up to the Intro I course, with additional emphasis on basic turns, jumps and combinations in the center. Familiarity of the basic terminology and foundational movements listed above is recommended. Dancers who are new to ballet should attend an Introductory Course before attending a Beginning Ballet class.

  1. Complete and submit the online INTRODUCTION TO BALLET 6-WEEK COURSE REGISTRATION FORM.
  2. Once received, a registration confirmation will be emailed, including payment options.

Updated: January 3, 2022 COVID-19 Procedures for In-Person Classes

  • Proof of Vaccination: All attendees in our Open Level Adult classes 
    are now required to provide proof of full vaccination and booster, upon checking-in 
    for class (“fully vaccinated” is defined as two weeks following full course of the initial vaccination until eligible to receive a booster and, for those eligible, one week after receiving a booster shot). Acceptable proof of vaccination includes a CDC vaccination card, a physical or digital copy of your vaccination card, or a personal digital COVID-19 vaccine record issued by the State of California or by an approved private company.
  • Face Mask Required: All attendees are currently required to wear a mask securely over the nose and mouth while on site and in class, regardless of vaccination status. KN95/N95 masks encouraged.
  • Track Your Symptoms & Exposure: Do not attend class if you are not feeling well, have traveled internationally within the past 14 days, have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 in the past 14 days, or 
    have tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 14 days.

Open Level Classes

The emphasis in these classes is on the enjoyment of movement, proper alignment, increased strength, and building an appreciation of dance. Classes often begin with floor-barre exercises, which are designed to work on core strength, turn-out, and flexibility, followed by traditional barre and center work. Classes are on-going. Dancers may join at any time!

Beginning Ballet – Recommended as a follow-up to our Introduction to Ballet Course or for those who have had less than two years of previous ballet training. Not best for the absolute beginner.

Beginning-Intermediate Ballet – This class is ideal for dancers who have had two or more years of ballet experience. Steps are combined to form more complex combinations both in the center and across the floor.

Advanced Ballet – This combined youth and adult class is ideal for the dancer who studied ballet throughout their youth or extensively as an adult.  It is a challenging yet fun class that has increased emphasis on turns and jumps.

  • Open Beginning Ballet, Class Cancelled 5/18 & 5/25
    Wednesday,  6:00-7:15pm
  • Open Advanced Ballet (Youth/Adult class)
    Saturday,  1:00-2:30pm

Fees:

  • 4-Class Pass: $72
  • Drop-in Classes: $20/class

New Registration procedures for adult drop-in classes:

  1. Pre-Registration requested. A minimum number of attendees required for the class to be held.
  2. To purchase a 4-Class Pass, Register Here.
  3. To purchase a Drop-In Class, Register Here.
  4. Arrive 5-10 minutes prior to your first class to complete the waiver of liability.

Tuition Policies

  • Payments are due in full before class.
  • Class cards are valid for 5-weeks. 
  • A 3% fee will be added for credit card payments.
  • Returned checks are subject to a fee of $25 per occurrence.
  • Fees are non-refundable and non-transferable.

Private Lessons

  • Private lessons are available. Please inquire for details.

Dress Code

The adult program has no specific dress code. Dancers may wear ballet attire or any comfortable exercise attire. Form fitting clothing that is easy to move and stretch in is recommended. Ballet shoes are required.
